At KHS we feel it is a basic entitlement for all our students to experience walking and camping in the Cairngorms at least once during their time at school. We therefore encourage all our pupils in S3 to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We are very blessed at KHS to have a large team of teachers and volunteers who are qualified and keen to help our students explore the mountains and our rich habitat here in the Cairngorm National Park.
For those of you not familiar with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, it is made up of four sections:
Physical Section – involves taking regular part in any sport, dance or fitness activity
Skills Section – involves taking part in an activity that will prove a broadened understanding or increased expertise in a chosen skill (e.g. learning a musical instrument, employment skills, coding club)
Volunteering Section – involves giving time to help people, the community or society, the environment or animals
Expedition Section – involves a practice walk (+ 1 overnight camp) followed two weeks later by a qualifying walk (+ 1 overnight camp)
