Senior Choice Options – 2019/2020

Welcome to the 2019/2020 Senior Choices

We are currently updating our Senior Options so please check back with us later.

On this page you will find all the information that you need to make positive choices in the senior phase.

This will allow you to progress with your learning, gain a portfolio of qualifications and ultimately equip you with the skills that you need to access a positive destination when you leave school.

Need more information? – Contact your Guidance Teacher at the school.

Part One - If you're new to course choices then the following documents might be useful to help improve your understanding of the Senior Phase (S4 – S6) and also to become more familiar with careers planning and our expectations for Home Learning.

All families who have pupils currently in S3 will also be offered a 1:1 interview and anyone can request a 1:1 interview though their guidance teacher.

Expectations for Home Learning

As well as choosing a range of subjects there will still be some core education input that is available to everyone. This includes PE (S4), RMPS and Social Education.

Part Two - Many of you will just be interested in the different subject areas and the combination of subjects that you can take. At KHS we operate a six column timetable. Pupils in S4 and S5 are expected to take at least six subjects and pupils in S6 are expected to take at least five subjects.

The following documents with links to course descriptors will help you with your planning. Each of the course descriptors includes information on expected entry requirements. Click on the picture of the course choice sheet to explore the subjects by column.

Please note there is a range of Distance Learning, Flexible Learning, College Learning & Work Based Learning opportunities to help compliment the traditional ‘column’ model.

Part Three – As well as the standard six column timetable. With our partners we also offer a range of alternative provision within the senior school.

This includes an option to go to college for a day a week, take higher courses via distance learning, opportunities for Foundation Apprenticeships  and a chance to gain university credit with UHI and / or the Open University.

There are also opportunities to a ‘leaving year’ timetable which involved certificated work experience.  The following document outlines the range of alternative options available at KHS.

What next? – Once you have had a chance to read all the information it will be time for you to decide your choices in S4 – S6. Every pupil in S4 – S6 has got an options form to complete.

If you are in S5 or S6 and interested in accessing a Foundation Apprenticeship through West Highland College see link below:

This must be returned to your Guidance Teacher by Friday 8th March 2019. Those pupils interested in alternative provision or studying for Advanced Highers should indicate this in the space on the back of the form.

Degree Modules and SCQF Level 7 at Kingussie High School (through Inverness College: UHI) – S6

These courses are for pupils in S6 only who can successfully studied at Higher level and are ready to progress to SCQF Level 7.

Higher National Certificates (HNC's) and Degree modules are an excellent way for S6 pupils to enhance their study portfolio and skills for applications for Higher education. We offer the opportunity to gain the equivalent of the first year of a degree by completing one of our HNC courses, or evidence degree study and independent skills by studying one of our degree modules. We have more information and videos to explain this to you.

Our HNC's and degree modules are available for online application this year and links can found at:
