Lead Teacher - Miss Lucy Hodes (lucy.hodes [at] kingussiehigh.org.uk)
The Music Department is always busy, and is well equipped to cater for all pupils studying Music at Kingussie High School with a spacious classroom and five practice rooms.
In the BGE pupils are given the opportunity to try several instruments; they will have tasters on keyboard, ukulele, guitar, bass guitar, drumkit and tuned percussion before selecting two instruments on which to focus, and will continue to develop their skills on these.
The Music courses on offer in the Senior Phase range from National 4 up to Advanced Higher and provide a broad practical experience of performing and creating music and develop related knowledge and understanding of music.
At all levels pupils learn about a broad range of musical styles, from Scottish music and music dating from the 16th Century through to Musical Theatre and Jazz.
There are many opportunities for pupils to get involved in the life of the Music Department whether they have chosen to study Music or not. Throughout the year a range of musical ensembles meet to rehearse and perform in a range of venues, such as school concerts and the Badenoch and Strathspey Music Festival. Many pupils also participated in the recent production of We will rock you.
Anyone who would like to find out more about extra curricular activities should speak to Miss Hodes about getting involved.
We are fortunate to have a number of visiting instrumental instructors who provide tuition on a variety of instruments. Pupils who have started an instrument in primary school are able to continue these lessons, and there are also opportunities to take up an instrument in secondary school. Instrumental tuition is available on the following instruments:
Music tuition is provided through High Life Highland; anyone interested in starting instrumental lessons should sign up via the link below.
